Calisthenics for beginners in Amsterdam: how to start
Never done a pull-up? That's exactly why this is for you — and how you can start in Amsterdam today.

You don't need any experience. The most common excuse for not starting calisthenics is "I can't even do a pull-up yet." That's exactly why most people who start with us in Amsterdam or Zaandam begin with zero experience. Calisthenics means training with your own bodyweight, and every exercise has an easier variation. A pull-up, for example, starts with an assisted or negative variation, and you build up from there. Nobody starts with a muscle-up.
Why calisthenics works so well for beginners. At a regular gym you often stand alone between machines. With calisthenics you train outside, in a group, with direct coaching on your form. That's not just more motivating, it's also safer: a coach watching live corrects your technique before a wrong movement turns into an injury. On top of that, you're working with your own bodyweight, so you control how hard an exercise is by adjusting the angle, the leverage, or the support.
Where do you start? Most beginner programmes — including ours — build on five foundational movements: the push-up, the pull-up (or a variation of it), the dip, the squat, and core stability (planks, hold positions). Once you've got a reasonable handle on these five, you can move on to skills like the handstand, muscle-up, front lever, and human flag. That sounds far off, but training twice a week already shows a difference in strength and mobility within a few weeks.
Where do you train in Amsterdam? Amsterdam has dozens of calisthenics parks, from Rembrandtpark to Westerpark and Oosterpark. We train at Parkour Park on Laan van Spartaan in Amsterdam West and at Darwinpark in Zaandam — both equipped with pull-up bars, dip bars, and enough space for a group. Live further away? It's worth checking which park is closest to you and giving it a try yourself, although without a coach you'll pick up proper form more slowly.
What if I'm afraid of doing something wrong? That's exactly what a group class is for. Bryan watches live, adapts exercises to your level, and corrects your technique before it becomes a problem. Our classes are full of people who started with zero experience — from teenagers to people well into their sixties. Nobody gets compared to the rest of the group.
How much do I need to train to see results? Twice a week is enough to see noticeable progress in the first month: more strength in your shoulders and back, a more stable core, and the first time an exercise that seemed impossible suddenly works. Calisthenics builds up gradually — a few more reps each week, a slightly harder variation, holding a position a few seconds longer. That also makes it a sport you can keep doing for years without it getting boring: there's always a next skill to work towards.
Do I need expensive gear? No. That's one of the biggest advantages of calisthenics over a gym membership. A pull-up bar in the park and your own bodyweight are enough. No membership before you're ready to commit, no expensive equipment, no queue for a machine. You can even keep training on your own between classes, in any of the many calisthenics parks in Amsterdam or Zaandam.
The best way to start: just join once. Reading about calisthenics is fine, but you'll only feel what it's really like after your first class. That's why your first trial class with us is always free and no-strings-attached: pick a location (Amsterdam or Zaandam), a time that suits you, and just come and see for yourself. Workout clothes, trainers, and a bottle of water is all you need.
